A monumental abstract work from 1907, featuring soft lilac tones and flowing, calligraphic lines that represent the stage of adulthood.
The Ten Largest, No. 5, Adulthood is part of a series of ten monumental paintings created by Hilma af Klint in 1907. These works represent the stages of human life, from childhood to old age. This specific piece focuses on the phase of adulthood, rendered through a synthesis of organic forms and calligraphic line work. The composition is dominated by a soft lilac background, upon which large, petal-like shapes and swirling, cursive-inspired motifs are arranged.
Af Klint produced these paintings as part of her involvement with The Five, a group of women interested in spiritualism and theosophy. Her approach to abstraction predates the more widely recognised movements of the early twentieth century. She utilised a personal visual language to map spiritual concepts, combining botanical references with geometric symbols. The large scale of the work, measuring over three metres in height, creates an immersive experience for the viewer.
Visually, the painting balances soft, pastel tones with stark white lines. The central flower-like form at the top provides a sense of symmetry, while the lower section features complex, looping lines that suggest movement and growth. The use of tempera on paper, mounted on canvas, gives the surface a matte, chalky quality that softens the impact of the bold shapes. By avoiding traditional perspective, af Klint creates a flat, decorative space that prioritises symbolic meaning over physical representation. This work remains a primary example of her unique contribution to the history of modern art, reflecting her interest in the unseen forces of the natural and spiritual worlds.
