A large-scale abstract composition by Hilma af Klint, representing the stage of youth through organic spirals and symbolic circular forms.
The Ten Largest, No. 3, Youth is a significant work from the series created by Hilma af Klint in 1907. This cycle of ten large-scale paintings explores the human life cycle, with this specific piece representing the stage of youth. The composition is dominated by a warm, orange ground that supports a variety of organic, circular, and spiral forms. These shapes, rendered in tempera, suggest biological growth, cellular division, and cosmic movement.
Af Klint developed a unique visual language influenced by her interest in theosophy and anthroposophy. She sought to map spiritual dimensions that remained invisible to the human eye. The inclusion of delicate, calligraphic lines and soft pastel tones against the bold orange background creates a sense of rhythmic expansion. Within the central upper portion, a circular motif contains text, integrating linguistic elements into the abstract field.
Unlike many of her contemporaries who moved toward abstraction through the reduction of physical objects, af Klint approached the canvas as a medium for recording metaphysical concepts. The work functions as a diagram of development, where the repetition of spirals and ovals suggests a continuous, unfolding process. The scale of the original work is immense, intended to envelop the viewer within its symbolic structure. By prioritising intuition and spiritual inquiry, af Klint produced a body of work that remained largely private during her lifetime. This print captures the specific colour relationships and the fluid, hand-painted quality of the original tempera application, allowing for a close examination of her systematic approach to form and colour theory.
