Juan Gris, born José Victoriano González-Pérez, was a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism. In this 1914 composition, Gris employs a rigorous geometric approach to the traditional still life genre. Unlike the earlier, more fragmented Analytic Cubism, this work demonstrates a clear synthesis of form and colour. The composition is anchored by a central oval, which contains the primary objects of the still life, including a glass, a bottle, and a newspaper.

Gris uses a palette dominated by warm ochres, browns, and deep purples to create a sense of structural stability. The inclusion of collage-like elements, such as the printed text of the newspaper, is a hallmark of his practice during this period. These elements serve to flatten the pictorial space while simultaneously providing a tactile quality to the surface. The artist balances these representational fragments with abstract geometric planes, creating a tension between the two-dimensional surface and the three-dimensional objects depicted.

The work reflects the artist's methodical approach to painting, where he often began with a mathematical grid before applying his subjects. This process allowed him to maintain a high degree of order within the complex visual language of Cubism. The interplay of light and shadow is handled with precision, giving the objects a sense of weight despite their deconstructed forms.
