Painted in 1779, The Swing is a notable example of the tapestry cartoons produced by Francisco Goya for the Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Bárbara in Madrid. These works were designed as patterns for tapestries intended to decorate the walls of the royal palaces, specifically the dining room of the Prince and Princess of Asturias at the El Pardo Palace.
The composition depicts a lighthearted scene of leisure, featuring a young woman seated on a swing suspended from a tree branch. She is surrounded by a group of figures, including children and a seated woman in the foreground, all dressed in the fashionable attire of the late eighteenth century. The setting is an open, airy environment, with a soft blue sky and distant hills providing a sense of space. Goya employs a light, airy palette, characteristic of the Rococo style, which contrasts with the more sombre and psychological works of his later career.
