This woodblock print is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige between 1856 and 1858. The composition features a prominent vertical banner, which dominates the foreground and directs the viewer's eye towards the festival activities occurring on the shore of Tsukudajima. The banner bears calligraphy relating to the Sumiyoshi Shrine, a site historically significant to the local fishing community of Edo.
To the left, a pine tree frames the scene, a common device in Hiroshige's work to provide depth and a sense of place. In the middle ground, the festival procession is visible, with a portable shrine (mikoshi) being carried by participants near the water. The background reveals the calm expanse of the bay, punctuated by small boats and a distant horizon line that transitions from a soft orange glow to a deep blue sky.
