This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga depicts a performer engaged in the Sumiyoshi Dance, a traditional performance art associated with the Sumiyoshi Shrine. Shigenaga was a significant figure in the early development of Ukiyo-e, operating in Edo during the first half of the eighteenth century. He is recognised for his contributions to the technical progression of printmaking, including the use of hand-applied colour and lacquer-like effects known as urushi-e.
The composition features a figure dressed in elaborate robes, adorned with motifs of maple leaves and wisteria. The performer holds a large, decorative umbrella, which serves as a structural element within the frame. The figure's posture is stylised, reflecting the conventions of theatrical portraiture common to the period. The lines are precise and calligraphic, defining the folds of the kimono and the delicate botanical patterns. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones and muted ochres, which is characteristic of the early hand-coloured prints before the widespread adoption of full-colour nishiki-e.
Shigenaga played a role in training later masters, including Harunobu. His work often focused on actors and beauties, capturing the aesthetic sensibilities of the urban merchant class in Edo. This print provides a view into the visual culture of the era, where performance and fashion were closely linked. The inclusion of text in the upper left corner is typical of the period, providing context or poetic reference to the subject matter. The print demonstrates the early mastery of line and balance that defined the Ukiyo-e tradition, offering a clear example of the graphic style that preceded the later, more complex multi-block printing techniques.
