A detailed 16th-century engraving by Philips Galle depicting the tragic Roman legend of Lucretia, rendered with precise line work and classical composition.
This engraving depicts the tragic conclusion of the Roman legend of Lucretia. According to the narrative, Lucretia took her own life after being violated by Sextus Tarquinius, an act that precipitated the fall of the Roman monarchy and the establishment of the Republic. Philips Galle, a prominent Dutch engraver and publisher, captures the immediate aftermath of the event. The composition is arranged within a domestic interior, where Lucretia is surrounded by her husband, Collatinus, and her father, Spurius Lucretius Tricipitinus.
The figures are rendered with the precise, controlled line work characteristic of sixteenth-century Northern European printmaking. Galle employs a clear, structured approach to the scene, using cross-hatching to define the musculature of the men and the folds of Lucretia's garments. Through the arched doorway in the background, a secondary scene shows soldiers, providing context to the broader political upheaval associated with the myth. The inclusion of Latin text at the bottom of the print serves to identify the subject and provide a moralising commentary on the event.
Galle was a central figure in the print trade in Antwerp, and his work often disseminated the compositions of other artists, such as Maerten van Heemskerck. This print reflects the period's interest in classical history and the use of dramatic, human-centred narratives to explore themes of honour and sacrifice. The anatomical treatment of the figures, particularly the soldiers in the foreground, demonstrates the influence of Italian Mannerism on Northern artists of the era. The print remains a clear example of how classical antiquity was interpreted and visualised by printmakers during the Renaissance, serving as both a narrative record and a display of technical skill in the medium of engraving.
