Beskrivning
A classic genre scene by Francisco Goya, depicting four women tossing a straw manikin in a traditional eighteenth-century Spanish pastime.
The Straw Manikin is one of the cartoons for tapestries commissioned for the dining room of the Prince of Asturias at the El Pardo Palace. Francisco Goya produced this work during his tenure as a court painter, a period defined by his mastery of light and social observation. The scene depicts four women tossing a straw-filled effigy into the air using a large sheet. This game, known as 'el pelele', was a common pastime in eighteenth-century Spain.
The composition is balanced, with the four women arranged in a circle around the central, airborne figure. Their expressions are lighthearted, contrasting with the rigid, doll-like posture of the manikin. Goya employs a soft, atmospheric palette, typical of his tapestry designs, which were intended to brighten the royal interiors. The sky occupies a significant portion of the canvas, rendered in pale blues and whites, providing a sense of openness that complements the outdoor setting.
While the subject appears playful, some art historians suggest it contains deeper social commentary regarding the role of women and the manipulation of male figures in courtly life. Goya captures the movement of the fabric and the figures with fluid brushwork. The painting remains a primary example of his ability to elevate everyday genre scenes into sophisticated compositions. It is currently held in the collection of the Museo del Prado in Madrid. This fine art print reproduces the original oil painting, maintaining the clarity of the figures and the subtle gradations of the sky.
