A detailed narrative scene by Vittore Carpaccio depicting the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, set against a wide, atmospheric Venetian-inspired backdrop.
Vittore Carpaccio, a Venetian painter of the Early Renaissance, produced this work as part of a series depicting the life of Saint Stephen. The composition captures the final moments of the saint, who is shown kneeling in prayer while his executioners prepare to cast stones. Carpaccio places the event within a wide, open environment, moving away from the confined interiors often seen in contemporary religious art. The figures are dressed in elaborate, exotic garments, reflecting the Venetian fascination with Eastern cultures and trade connections during the period.
The scene is constructed with a clear sense of depth, leading the eye from the foreground action toward a distant, fortified city perched upon a hill. The sky is filled with soft, rolling clouds that provide a sense of atmospheric scale. Carpaccio employs a narrative approach, grouping the figures to create a sense of movement and tension. The executioners are depicted in various states of action, some bending to gather stones, others poised to throw. Saint Stephen remains calm, his gaze directed upward, providing a contrast to the surrounding agitation.
This painting demonstrates the artist's attention to detail, particularly in the rendering of textiles and the specific facial features of the crowd. The colour palette relies on earthy tones, punctuated by the deep reds and ochres of the garments. The work remains a representative example of the Venetian school, which prioritised light, colour, and narrative clarity. By situating the biblical event in a setting that mirrors the topography of the Mediterranean, Carpaccio brings a sense of immediacy to the historical subject matter. The painting is currently housed in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, where it continues to be studied for its technical execution and its place within the broader cycle of the saint's life.
