A traditional Japanese woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyomasa depicting a seasonal festival scene from the series Fashionable Twelve Months.
This woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyomasa depicts a scene from the series Furyu Juni-kagetsu, or Fashionable Twelve Months. The composition captures a group of figures participating in a seasonal festival, specifically associated with the sixth month of the lunar calendar. The participants are gathered around a central pole topped with a floral arrangement, likely a portable shrine or a decorative float used in local processions.
The figures are rendered in the characteristic style of the period, with elongated proportions and expressive gestures. Their garments feature varied geometric patterns, including checks and circular motifs, which provide a rhythmic visual quality to the group. The artist employs a muted colour palette, relying on soft greens, reds, and earthy tones to define the forms. The background is simplified, with stylized clouds and a suggestion of water, keeping the focus on the human activity in the foreground.
Ishikawa Toyomasa was active during the mid-to-late eighteenth century, a period when the production of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, reached a high level of technical sophistication. These prints were often produced for a popular audience, documenting the customs, fashions, and leisure activities of the urban population in Edo. The inclusion of text in the upper right corner identifies the specific month, a common convention in series depicting the annual cycle of events. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance decorative elements with narrative clarity, creating a scene that is both informative regarding historical customs and visually engaging through its arrangement of figures and patterns.
