A detailed Mughal miniature by Basavana depicting the siege of Arbela, featuring complex military action and architectural detail.
This work is a folio from the Jami al-tavarikh, or Compendium of Chronicles, a historical text originally authored by Rashid al-Din. The Mughal court commissioned this specific manuscript during the reign of Akbar the Great. Basavana, a master painter in the imperial workshop, executed this scene with the characteristic precision of the late sixteenth-century Mughal style.
The composition depicts the siege of Arbela, a military engagement occurring during the campaigns of the Mongol ruler Hulagu Khan. The artist organises the scene into distinct zones: the fortified city walls occupy the upper register, while the foreground shows the chaotic activity of the battlefield. Soldiers on horseback, infantrymen, and commanders engage in combat, rendered with a focus on individual posture and costume detail. The architecture of the city, with its domes and crenellated walls, reflects the artistic conventions of the period, blending Persian influence with the specific aesthetic preferences of the Mughal atelier.
Basavana employs a high-angle perspective to manage the density of the figures. The use of opaque watercolour allows for the application of saturated pigments, while gold leaf accents provide a sense of material luxury. The figures are depicted with a degree of naturalism that distinguishes the Mughal school from earlier Persian traditions. Each participant in the scene, from the archers on the ramparts to the mounted warriors in the foreground, contributes to a narrative of military action. The work demonstrates the technical skill of the imperial painters, who were tasked with translating historical chronicles into visual form for the royal library. The inclusion of Persian script at the base of the folio provides context for the event, linking the visual narrative to the written history of the Mongol conquests.
