A Post-Impressionist study by Vincent van Gogh, depicting a labourer binding wheat in a field, based on an original drawing by Jean-François Millet.
Vincent van Gogh painted The Sheaf-Binder in September 1889 while residing at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. This work is one of several interpretations of Jean-François Millet's drawings, specifically from the series 'The Four Hours of the Day'. Van Gogh held a deep admiration for Millet, viewing him as a master of peasant life and agricultural labour. He often turned to Millet's compositions for inspiration when he lacked direct access to models or subjects during his confinement.
The painting depicts a labourer bent over a large sheaf of wheat, his posture reflecting the physical demands of the harvest. Van Gogh employs his characteristic impasto technique, using thick, rhythmic brushstrokes to define both the figure and the surrounding field. The colour palette is dominated by ochre and golden yellows, which contrast with the cool, pale blue of the worker's clothing and the sky. This juxtaposition of complementary colours creates a sense of visual energy within the scene.
Unlike the more subdued tones of Millet's original charcoal drawings, Van Gogh's version introduces a heightened sense of movement. The swirling lines of the wheat stalks suggest the wind and the tactile nature of the grain. The figure is integrated into the environment, with the lines of the clothing echoing the textures of the harvest. This work demonstrates Van Gogh's ability to translate the themes of his predecessors into his own distinct visual language, focusing on the raw, physical connection between the worker and the land. The composition remains focused on the central figure, ensuring the viewer's attention stays on the act of labour itself, rather than the broader surroundings.
