A delicate ink and colour painting by Katsushika Hokusai depicting the Seven Gods of Good Fortune against a subtle backdrop of Mount Fuji.
This work depicts the Shichifukujin, or Seven Gods of Good Fortune, a group of deities originating from a blend of Japanese, Chinese, and Indian traditions. Katsushika Hokusai, a master of the Ukiyo-e school, presents these figures in a procession, moving across a sparse, atmospheric background. The composition is balanced by the subtle silhouette of Mount Fuji on the left and a gnarled pine tree on the right, elements that provide a sense of place and scale to the divine figures.
The figures themselves are rendered with delicate brushwork, capturing the distinct attributes of each deity. Ebisu, Daikokuten, Bishamonten, Benzaiten, Fukurokuju, Jurojin, and Hotei are shown in a state of movement, their robes and postures suggesting a light, ethereal quality. Hokusai uses a muted palette, allowing the focus to remain on the interaction between the gods and the surrounding space. The silk support provides a soft, aged texture that complements the ink washes and subtle colour applications.
Unlike his more widely known woodblock prints, this painting demonstrates Hokusai's skill with the brush in a more intimate, painterly format. The negative space is utilised effectively, a common technique in East Asian ink painting to suggest distance and air. The inclusion of Mount Fuji serves as a recurring motif in Hokusai's body of work, grounding the mythological subject matter within the Japanese geography he frequently explored. The work reflects the artist's interest in both the spiritual and the natural worlds, combining them into a single, harmonious scene. The scroll format, indicated by the decorative borders, suggests this piece was intended for private contemplation or display in a traditional interior setting.
