A satirical etching by James Ensor from 1904, depicting the sin of Pride through the artist's signature grotesque and mask-like imagery.
This etching, titled L'orgueil (Pride), forms part of James Ensor's series depicting the Seven Deadly Sins. Created in 1904, the work demonstrates the artist's characteristic approach to social satire and the grotesque. Ensor, a central figure in the development of modern Belgian art, frequently employed distorted figures and macabre imagery to critique human vanity and societal hypocrisy.
The composition centres on a stiff, formal figure, surrounded by a chaotic assembly of grotesque faces, skeletal forms, and symbolic animals. A cock, often associated with arrogance, perches atop a head in the upper left, while a scythe-wielding skeleton looms in the background. The dense, cross-hatched lines create a claustrophobic atmosphere, typical of Ensor's graphic work. The figures surrounding the central character possess exaggerated, mask-like features, a recurring motif in the artist's oeuvre that reflects his interest in the carnival traditions of his native Ostend.
Ensor's technique in this print relies on sharp, biting lines to define the unsettling expressions of his subjects. By combining traditional religious allegory with a cynical, modern sensibility, he transforms a moralising theme into a personal commentary on the human condition. The work avoids sentimentality, opting instead for a raw, confrontational aesthetic that challenges the viewer. This print provides a clear example of Ensor's ability to manipulate etching as a medium for psychological exploration, moving away from purely descriptive art toward a more subjective, expressive visual language. The inclusion of the title and date in the lower margin confirms its status as a deliberate, finished composition within his wider graphic catalogue.
