A classic eighteenth-century Japanese woodblock print by Torii Kiyoshige, depicting the kabuki actor Sawamura Sojuro II in a stylised theatrical role.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyoshige depicts the kabuki actor Sawamura Sojuro II in the role of Ume no Yoshibei. Produced during the mid-eighteenth century, the work belongs to the yakusha-e genre, which focused on portraying popular actors of the Edo period. The Torii school held a long-standing association with the kabuki theatre, often producing promotional prints that functioned as advertisements for specific performances.
The composition follows the conventions of the era, presenting the actor in a full-length standing pose. The figure wears a kimono decorated with a repeating pattern of birds, which provides a visual rhythm across the surface of the garment. The colour palette is restricted to the benizuri-e style, a technique that utilised a limited range of pigments, typically pink and green, applied to a monochrome base. The lines are precise and controlled, reflecting the technical requirements of woodblock carving during this period.
The actor's posture and facial expression are characteristic of the exaggerated, stylised acting techniques found in kabuki. The inclusion of calligraphic text surrounding the figure serves to identify the actor and the character, as well as providing context regarding the theatrical production. The paper shows signs of age, with a warm, muted tone that is typical of surviving prints from this era. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of popular entertainment and visual culture in eighteenth-century Japan, capturing the aesthetic preferences of the urban merchant class who frequented the theatres of Edo.
