A Ming Dynasty ink and colour painting depicting the scholar Fu Sheng dictating the Book of Documents to a scribe in a garden.
This work depicts the legendary scholar Fu Sheng, a figure from the Han Dynasty, as he dictates the Book of Documents to a scribe. Du Jin, a painter active during the Ming Dynasty, employs a refined approach to figure painting that emphasises the narrative quality of the scene. The composition is organised around the central figures, who are seated on mats in a garden setting. The elderly Fu Sheng, with his weathered features and expressive posture, occupies the left side of the arrangement. Opposite him, a younger scribe leans over a low table, diligently recording the text onto scrolls.
The background features banana trees and architectural elements, rendered with a light touch that avoids overwhelming the primary subjects. The artist uses a muted palette, relying on the natural tones of the silk and subtle applications of ink to define the forms. The lines are precise and controlled, characteristic of the professional painting styles favoured by the literati and court circles of the period.
Du Jin was known for his ability to capture historical and literary themes with clarity. In this piece, the interaction between the teacher and the scribe is the primary focus. The surrounding environment provides a sense of place without distracting from the intellectual exchange taking place. The work reflects the cultural value placed on the preservation of classical texts during the Ming era. By choosing to depict this specific moment, the artist connects the viewer to a long tradition of scholarship and historical record-keeping. The balance between the figures and the open space creates a quiet, contemplative atmosphere suitable for a study or a library setting.
