This woodblock print is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige between 1856 and 1858. The image depicts the Sazaidō Hall, a three-storey structure located within the grounds of the Five Hundred Rakan Temple in the Honjo district of Edo. The temple was well-known for its collection of five hundred statues of Rakan, the disciples of the Buddha, which drew many visitors during the Edo period.
Hiroshige employs a high vantage point, looking out from the balcony of the Sazaidō Hall. This perspective allows the viewer to observe the surrounding grounds, where figures walk along paths between smaller buildings and trees. The composition balances the architectural detail of the hall on the right with the open, green space of the temple gardens. In the distance, a line of trees marks the horizon against a sky that transitions from a pale blue to a warm, sunset-toned band near the earth. The use of colour is controlled, with soft greens and earthy tones dominating the scene, punctuated by the red cartouches that contain the series and print titles.
The print demonstrates the artist's ability to capture the atmosphere of specific locations in Edo.
