A detailed 1747 engraving by Jan Punt, depicting the biblical sacrifice of Isaac after a composition by Peter Paul Rubens.
This etching and engraving by the Dutch artist Jan Punt, dated 1747, depicts the biblical narrative of the sacrifice of Isaac. The composition is based on an original painting by Peter Paul Rubens, which was housed in the Jesuit Church in Antwerp. The scene captures the moment an angel intervenes to stop Abraham from completing the sacrifice of his son. Isaac lies bound upon an altar, his eyes covered, while Abraham looks upward toward the descending messenger. A ram, caught in the thicket, appears in the lower left corner, signifying the substitute offering.
Punt employs a sophisticated range of line work to translate the painterly qualities of the Rubens original into a graphic medium. The octagonal frame provides a structured boundary for the dynamic figures, which are rendered with a sense of movement and dramatic tension characteristic of the Baroque period. The musculature of the figures and the swirling drapery reflect the influence of Rubens, whose work was frequently reproduced by printmakers of the eighteenth century to disseminate his compositions to a wider audience.
The print includes the Latin inscription from Genesis 22:11-12, which identifies the moment of divine intervention. The technical precision of the engraving allows for subtle gradations of light and shadow, creating a sense of volume in the figures and depth within the composition. This work is a fine example of the reproductive print tradition, where the skill of the engraver was measured by their ability to capture the spirit and detail of a master painting. The clarity of the lines and the balanced arrangement of the figures make this a compelling piece for those interested in the intersection of religious history and European printmaking traditions.
