A refined eighteenth-century etching by Charles-Nicolas Cochin, depicting a romantic garden scene inspired by the work of Antoine Watteau.
This etching, titled The Romancer, demonstrates the technical precision of Charles-Nicolas Cochin, a prominent French engraver of the eighteenth century. The composition is based on a painting by Antoine Watteau, reflecting the period's fascination with theatricality and amorous intrigue. The scene depicts a young woman holding a guitar, seated in a garden setting, while a suitor kneels before her. Their interaction is observed by onlookers emerging from the shadows, adding a layer of voyeuristic tension to the narrative.
Cochin employs fine, controlled lines to render the textures of the figures' clothing and the surrounding foliage. The use of cross-hatching creates depth and volume, typical of the high-quality reproductive prints produced in Paris during this era. The inclusion of a small spaniel at the feet of the suitor and scattered roses provides a sense of domestic intimacy, contrasting with the public nature of the garden. The text at the bottom of the print offers a poetic commentary on the scene, a common feature in eighteenth-century French prints that aimed to engage the viewer in the moral or social implications of the depicted action.
As a master of the burin, Cochin captures the light and shadow with clarity. The work is a fine example of the Rococo style, which prioritised grace, wit, and the depiction of leisure. The print was originally sold by Gersaint, a well-known Parisian art dealer, indicating its status as a desirable object for collectors of the time. This museum-grade print preserves the delicate tonal variations of the original copperplate, allowing for a clear view of the artist's draftsmanship and the narrative complexity inherent in the work.
