A delicate etching by James McNeill Whistler, capturing the bustling Venetian waterfront with minimal, expressive lines and a focus on atmospheric space.
The Riva, No. 1 is a notable etching produced by James McNeill Whistler during his stay in Venice between 1879 and 1880. Commissioned by the Fine Art Society, this period in Venice allowed Whistler to refine his approach to printmaking, moving away from the dense, heavily worked plates of his earlier career towards a more economical use of line. In this work, the artist captures the bustling activity of the Venetian waterfront with remarkable precision and restraint.
The composition is defined by a sense of openness. Whistler leaves large areas of the paper blank, allowing the viewer to perceive the water and the quay through minimal marks. The figures scattered along the foreground are rendered with quick, gestural strokes, suggesting movement and casual interaction without the need for excessive detail. In the background, the architectural forms of the city are suggested through delicate, rhythmic lines that define the buildings and the masts of the moored vessels.
Whistler was deeply interested in the atmospheric qualities of the city. By focusing on the interplay between light and shadow, he creates a sense of space that feels both immediate and transient. The etching demonstrates his ability to suggest complex scenes through a sparse vocabulary of marks. This print is part of the First Venice Set, a collection that helped re-establish his reputation as a master etcher. The work reflects his belief that art should focus on the arrangement of line and tone rather than narrative content. It remains a clear example of his mature style, where the economy of the medium is used to evoke the specific character of a place.
