A 1753 mezzotint portrait of the Reverend William Welsteed by John Singleton Copley, capturing the formal dignity of colonial New England clergy.
This mezzotint depicts the Reverend William Welsteed, a prominent figure in eighteenth-century Boston. Executed by John Singleton Copley in 1753, the work captures the subject within a classic oval frame, a format common to the period for formal portraiture. Copley, who was only fifteen years old at the time of this production, demonstrates a technical grasp of the mezzotint process, a medium that relies on the manipulation of light and shadow to create tonal depth. The Reverend is shown in clerical attire, including the distinctive bands at his neck, which signify his ecclesiastical role. His expression is composed, reflecting the gravity expected of a religious leader in colonial New England society. The inscription at the base of the print identifies the subject and provides the date, as well as the location of the printing house where it was sold by Stephen Whiting. This print offers a glimpse into the early career of Copley, who would go on to become the most successful portrait painter in the American colonies before his relocation to London. The work is a study in the formal conventions of the era, prioritising clarity of form and the dignified presentation of the sitter. The use of the mezzotint technique allows for a soft transition between the dark background and the illuminated features of the Reverend, providing a sense of volume and presence. As a historical document, it preserves the likeness of a specific individual while documenting the aesthetic standards of mid-eighteenth-century Boston print culture.
