A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Philips Galle, after a design by Maerten van Heemskerck, depicting the biblical return of the prodigal son.
This engraving depicts the biblical parable of the prodigal son, a narrative concerning forgiveness and familial reconciliation. The composition follows a design by Maerten van Heemskerck, a prominent Dutch painter of the sixteenth century. In the foreground, the father embraces his kneeling son, who appears dishevelled and weary from his travels. The figures are rendered with anatomical precision, typical of the period's interest in classical form and human expression.
To the right, secondary figures attend to the son, providing new garments and footwear, which signifies his restoration to the household. The background features architectural elements, including a classical portico and a distant archway, which provide a sense of spatial depth. These structures reflect the influence of Italian Renaissance architecture on Northern European artists of the era. The scene is framed by a gnarled tree on the left, which adds a naturalistic element to the otherwise structured environment.
Below the image, a Latin inscription reads: Tandem poenitentia motus patrem adit, ab eoq in gratiam receptus est. This translates to: Moved at last by repentance, he approaches his father and is received by him into favour. The engraving technique employs fine lines to create texture and shadow, particularly in the drapery of the garments and the musculature of the figures. The work demonstrates the technical skill of Philips Galle, who was a prolific engraver and publisher in Antwerp. His collaboration with designers like Heemskerck allowed for the dissemination of complex religious and moral narratives to a wider audience through print media. This piece remains a clear example of the printmaking traditions that flourished in the Low Countries during the sixteenth century, combining religious subject matter with the stylistic developments of the Northern Renaissance.
