A fine etching by Henry Louis Basan, reproducing Rembrandt's 1636 depiction of the return of the prodigal son.
This etching by Henry Louis Basan reproduces the 1636 original composition by Rembrandt van Rijn. Basan, a French engraver and print publisher, operated a business that acquired many of Rembrandt's original copper plates, allowing for the production of later impressions. This work depicts the biblical narrative of the prodigal son returning to his father, a subject Rembrandt explored throughout his career.
The composition focuses on the emotional encounter between the two figures. The son, depicted in a state of disarray and humility, kneels before his father, who leans forward to embrace him. The scene is set within a domestic architectural frame, with secondary figures observing from the background. Basan employs a technique of fine, cross-hatched lines to replicate the tonal variations and atmospheric depth characteristic of Rembrandt's original etching style. The play of light and shadow, or chiaroscuro, remains a primary element of the image, guiding the viewer's eye toward the central figures.
As a reproduction, this print offers insight into the dissemination of Rembrandt's work during the nineteenth century. Basan's ability to translate the painterly quality of the original into the linear medium of etching demonstrates the technical skill required for such historical reproductions. The print captures the narrative tension and the human vulnerability inherent in the original scene. It serves as a study in how master works were preserved and circulated through the medium of printmaking long after the artist's death. The inclusion of the signature and date in the lower portion of the plate maintains the historical reference to the 1636 original, providing a link between the seventeenth-century master and the nineteenth-century printmaker.
