A detailed seventeenth-century etching depicting the biblical return of the Prodigal Son, rendered with precise line work and narrative depth.
This etching by Claes Jansz. Visscher (II) depicts the biblical parable of the Prodigal Son. The composition is divided into two distinct zones. In the foreground, the central emotional encounter occurs: the elderly father embraces his kneeling, dishevelled son, who has returned home in a state of repentance. The figures are rendered with precise line work, capturing the textures of their garments and the expressions of relief and sorrow. To the left, a domestic scene unfolds under a colonnade, where a servant prepares a fatted calf, providing a narrative contrast to the reunion taking place in the foreground.
Visscher, a prominent figure in the Dutch printmaking tradition, demonstrates a mastery of spatial organisation. The architectural elements, including the classical columns and the distant building, create a sense of depth that guides the viewer through the scene. A dog stands in the foreground, acting as a grounding element that connects the viewer to the primary action. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the print, referencing the Gospel of Luke, situates the work within the moralising tradition common in seventeenth-century Dutch art.
The print is executed with a focus on clarity and narrative legibility. The hatching techniques used to define shadows and form reflect the technical standards of the period. By balancing the intimate human drama with the surrounding activity of the household, Visscher provides a comprehensive visual retelling of the parable. This work is an example of the high-quality reproductive printmaking that defined the Dutch market during the seventeenth century, where biblical themes were frequently explored to convey moral lessons to a broad audience. The print remains a clear record of the stylistic conventions and thematic interests of the era, offering a view into the intersection of religious narrative and daily life.
