A detailed 1588 etching by Philipp Uffenbach depicting the dramatic moment of the Resurrection with intense light effects and expressive figures.
This etching by Philipp Uffenbach, dated 1588, captures the dramatic moment of the Resurrection. Uffenbach, a Frankfurt-based artist who served as a master to Adam Elsheimer, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of late sixteenth-century German printmaking. The composition is dense, utilising a complex arrangement of figures to convey the chaotic reaction of the Roman guards at the tomb.
The central figure of the risen Christ is depicted with a radiant, almost explosive energy, contrasting with the startled and disoriented soldiers. Uffenbach employs a rigorous system of cross-hatching to define the metallic sheen of the armour and the rugged textures of the rocky background. The light source, emanating from the figure of Christ, creates sharp shadows and high-contrast areas that guide the viewer across the busy scene. The soldiers are rendered in various states of alarm, with one figure in the foreground recoiling while another attempts to shield his eyes from the blinding light.
As a practitioner of Northern Mannerism, Uffenbach favours elongated proportions and a sense of agitated motion. The print reflects the period's interest in dramatic narrative and the mastery of the etching needle to achieve tonal depth. The rocky outcrop in the background provides a vertical anchor to the composition, while the atmospheric effects of the light rays add a supernatural quality to the event. This work provides an insight into the stylistic preoccupations of the era, where theological subjects were treated with a focus on human emotion and physical reaction. The fine lines and varied density of the hatching demonstrate the artist's control over the medium, resulting in a work that balances narrative clarity with stylistic complexity.
