The Rape of Europa is a masterwork of the Venetian Renaissance, painted by Titian for King Philip II of Spain. It forms part of the series known as the poesie, a collection of mythological subjects derived from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The composition depicts the moment Zeus, having transformed into a bull, abducts the Phoenician princess Europa, carrying her across the sea to Crete.

Titian employs a fluid, painterly technique that prioritises colour and light over rigid line. The brushwork is loose, particularly in the turbulent sky and the churning waters, which creates a sense of motion and atmospheric instability. Europa is positioned in a dynamic, diagonal pose, her body twisted as she looks back toward the shore. The inclusion of putti in the sky and the distant, hazy coastline adds to the narrative complexity of the scene. The palette is dominated by warm, fleshy tones for the figures, contrasted against the deep blues and greys of the sea and sky.

This work demonstrates the artist's late style, where forms are constructed through layers of pigment rather than precise outlines. The energy of the scene is conveyed through the interaction of the figures and the surrounding environment. The painting is currently held in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. It remains a primary example of how Titian interpreted classical literature through the lens of Venetian colourism, focusing on the emotional and physical drama of the mythological encounter.
