A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Antonio Tempesta depicting the mythological encounter between Neptune and Caenis.
This etching by Antonio Tempesta depicts the mythological transformation of Caenis, a narrative drawn from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Tempesta, a Florentine artist active in Rome, produced a large body of work illustrating classical myths, often characterised by his energetic line work and mastery of the etching medium. In this composition, Neptune is shown with Caenis on a shoreline, while his sea-horses wait in the surf nearby. The artist employs a clear, narrative style, typical of his illustrative series, which were widely circulated across Europe during the early seventeenth century.
The visual language of the print relies on precise hatching to define form and shadow. Tempesta captures the movement of the figures and the turbulent water with rhythmic, calligraphic strokes. The background features a distant coastal fortification, providing a sense of place to the mythological encounter. The inclusion of the Latin inscription at the base, 'Caenis in virginitatis amissae solatium in virum fortissimum a Neptuno transformatur', identifies the subject matter directly for the viewer, explaining the transformation of Caenis into a man by Neptune as compensation for her lost virginity.
Tempesta's work reflects the broader interest in classical literature that defined the intellectual culture of the period. His ability to condense complex narrative sequences into single, legible images made his prints popular among collectors and artists alike. This piece is a fine example of his technical proficiency and his approach to classical storytelling. The print demonstrates the clarity of his draughtsmanship and his ability to balance human figures with natural elements within a confined pictorial space. It remains a representative example of the printmaking traditions that flourished in Italy at the turn of the seventeenth century, offering a window into the period's fascination with Ovidian themes.
