A detailed etching by Jean-François Raffaëlli depicting a rag picker on the outskirts of Paris, capturing the social reality of the late nineteenth century.
Jean-François Raffaëlli was a keen observer of the Parisian periphery, focusing his attention on the individuals who existed on the margins of urban society. In this etching, he depicts a rag picker, a figure common to the outskirts of late nineteenth-century Paris. The subject stands with a weary posture, his hands tucked into his pockets, accompanied by the large sack used to collect discarded materials. The background features the industrial skyline of the city, with smoke rising from chimneys, suggesting the encroaching reach of urbanisation upon the rural fringe.
Raffaëlli utilised a combination of etching and aquatint to capture the texture of the man's clothing and the desolate quality of the environment. His line work is deliberate and descriptive, focusing on the physical reality of the figure rather than idealising his condition. The muted colour palette, applied with restraint, draws attention to the subject's isolation. By choosing to document the lives of the working poor and the inhabitants of the banlieues, Raffaëlli provided a visual record of the social conditions that accompanied the rapid expansion of the French capital.
This work reflects the artist's interest in what he termed 'caractérisme', a philosophy that prioritised the depiction of specific types of people within their authentic environments. The composition is balanced, placing the figure centrally against a backdrop that provides context for his labour. The print captures a moment of stillness, inviting the viewer to consider the human element within the changing industrial landscape. It is a direct representation of a social class often overlooked in the broader art historical narrative of the period, presented with a focus on honesty and observational detail.
