A 16th-century Mughal miniature painting from the Tuti-nama, depicting a dramatic court scene with fine detail and gold leaf accents.
This miniature painting originates from the Tuti-nama, or Tales of a Parrot, a significant manuscript commissioned during the early reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. The work depicts a scene from the eighth night of the narrative, illustrating a dramatic moment where a prince faces execution. The composition is structured within a clear architectural frame, typical of the period, featuring a central pavilion set against a sky rendered in gold and blue.
The artist, Ghulam 'Ali, employs a flattened perspective that prioritises narrative clarity over spatial depth. The figures are arranged across a vibrant red ground, their gestures and postures conveying the tension of the unfolding drama. A ruler sits upon a throne, gesturing towards the prince, who is being led away by guards. The attention to detail in the textiles, jewellery, and architectural elements reflects the synthesis of Persian artistic traditions with indigenous Indian styles that defined early Mughal court art.
Colour plays a primary role in the composition, with the deep red of the interior space contrasting against the cool tones of the figures' garments and the golden sky above. The use of gold leaf adds a luminous quality to the architectural details and the sky, a common feature in high-status manuscripts of the sixteenth century. This piece provides a window into the storytelling culture of the Mughal court, where literature and visual art were closely linked. The Tuti-nama remains a primary source for understanding the development of the Mughal painting style, showing the transition from earlier traditions toward the more naturalistic and refined aesthetic that would characterise the later imperial workshops.
