A detail from the Champmol Altarpiece, this work by Melchior Broederlam captures the Presentation of Christ with the refined detail and sculptural drapery characteristic of the International Gothic style.
This panel, part of the larger Champmol Altarpiece commissioned by Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, represents a significant moment in Northern European painting. Melchior Broederlam, a Flemish artist, executed these wings for the Carthusian monastery of Champmol near Dijon. The work demonstrates the transition from the flat, decorative styles of the fourteenth century toward a more naturalistic approach that would define the later Flemish Primitives.
The scene depicts the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. Simeon, the elderly priest, receives the infant Jesus from the Virgin Mary. The architectural setting is rendered with a rudimentary attempt at perspective, featuring slender columns that frame the figures. The figures themselves possess a sculptural quality, with heavy drapery folds that suggest the weight and volume of the fabric. The use of oil paint allows for a degree of luminosity and detail, particularly in the textures of the garments and the gold-leaf halos.
Broederlam integrates Gothic architectural elements into the background, creating a sense of space that was advanced for the period. The colour palette is dominated by deep blues, reds, and gold, typical of the courtly art of the Valois dukes. The figures are arranged in a formal, balanced composition, reflecting the devotional nature of the altarpiece. This work remains a primary example of the International Gothic style, bridging the gap between medieval traditions and the emerging realism of the fifteenth century. It provides a clear view into the artistic preferences of the Burgundian court, where the artist served as a valet de chambre and painter to the Duke.
