An authentic shunga woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada, depicting an intimate scene set against the backdrop of a busy Japanese river crossing.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada belongs to the genre of shunga, or erotic art, which flourished during the Edo period in Japan. Kunisada, a prolific designer of ukiyo-e, produced numerous works depicting the private lives of figures from various social strata. This specific composition, titled The Posting Station at Shimada, situates the subjects within a domestic interior that opens onto a view of a river crossing. The background features a bustling scene of travellers and boats, providing a contrast to the intimate encounter occurring in the foreground.
The print employs the characteristic flat perspective and bold outlines common to the ukiyo-e tradition. Kunisada uses a palette of muted earth tones, punctuated by the deep red of the fabric draped across the male figure. The composition is structured to draw the eye toward the central interaction, while the surrounding elements, such as the discarded garments and the open architectural frame, ground the scene in a specific, albeit stylised, reality. The inclusion of text within the image area is typical of the period, often serving to provide context or poetic commentary on the subject matter.
As a practitioner of the Utagawa school, Kunisada was known for his technical precision and his ability to capture the fashions and social habits of his time. This work reflects the broader cultural interest in the Tōkaidō road, a major route connecting Edo and Kyoto, which served as a frequent subject for artists. By placing an erotic scene within a recognisable travel location, the artist blends the mundane aspects of daily life with the private sphere. The print remains a significant example of the graphic techniques used in nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking, demonstrating the balance between decorative pattern and narrative detail.
