This work depicts the legendary ninth-century poet Ono no Komachi, a figure frequently represented in Japanese art for her beauty and melancholic verse. Shokadō Shōjō, a monk and artist associated with the Kan'ei culture of the early Edo period, employs a style reminiscent of traditional Yamato-e painting. The figure is shown in a state of repose, surrounded by the voluminous layers of her courtly robes. The fabric is decorated with a repeating floral motif, which contrasts with the fluid, calligraphic lines of the poem inscribed above her head.
The composition prioritises a decorative arrangement of form over spatial depth. The artist uses a muted, earthy background to ground the figure, allowing the red and white tones of the garments to draw the eye. Shokadō Shōjō was known for his mastery of calligraphy, and the integration of text into the pictorial space is a defining feature of this piece.
