A late etching by Samuel Palmer depicting a ploughman with oxen, characterised by fine cross-hatching and a dramatic, atmospheric sky.
The Ploughman is a late etching by Samuel Palmer, produced near the end of his career. It reflects his preoccupation with the pastoral ideal, a theme that occupied his imagination throughout his life. The composition depicts a labourer guiding a team of oxen across a bridge, set against a dramatic, cloud-filled sky. Tall, slender cypress trees frame the right side of the scene, creating a vertical balance to the horizontal movement of the figures below.
Palmer employs a dense network of cross-hatching and fine lines to build texture and shadow. This technique creates a sense of atmospheric weight, particularly in the swirling clouds that dominate the upper portion of the print. The light source appears to emanate from behind the distant hills, casting a glow that illuminates the foreground figures and the stone bridge. The inclusion of birds in flight adds a sense of motion to the otherwise quiet, rural setting.
This work belongs to a series of etchings that Palmer created during his later years, often revisiting subjects from his earlier, more experimental period in Shoreham. While his earlier works were characterised by a more visionary intensity, this etching demonstrates a refined technical control. The precision of the line work allows for a subtle gradation of tone, moving from the deep blacks of the shadowed trees to the delicate, lighter areas of the sky. It is a study in light and shadow, capturing the quiet dignity of agricultural life. The print remains a representative example of Palmer's ability to imbue a simple rural scene with a sense of gravity and timelessness, using the medium of etching to achieve a painterly quality.
