A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Jakob Wangner, after Jean Pillement, depicting a lively winter scene on a frozen waterway.
This etching, titled Les Plaisirs de l'Hiver, is a fine example of eighteenth-century printmaking. Jakob Wangner executed this work after a design by the French artist Jean Pillement. The composition captures a typical winter scene, where the frozen surface of a waterway becomes a social space for the local community. Figures are shown skating, walking, and riding in a small sledge, while dogs roam the foreground.
The scene is framed by a rustic stone structure on the left and a cottage on the right, creating a sense of depth that draws the eye toward the distant horizon. The trees, stripped of their leaves, are rendered with delicate, precise lines that convey the chill of the season. The sky is filled with heavy, textured clouds, suggesting an overcast winter day.
Wangner, a skilled engraver based in Augsburg, was known for his ability to translate the fluid, decorative style of French masters into the more rigid medium of copperplate engraving. The inscription at the bottom indicates that the print was sold at the Négociant commun de l'Académie Impériale d'Empire, reflecting the commercial distribution of such works during the period. The attention to detail in the clothing of the figures and the textures of the stone and wood surfaces demonstrates the technical proficiency required for this type of reproduction. This print offers a glimpse into the seasonal activities of the era, presented with the characteristic charm and balance of the Rococo period. It remains a clear record of the collaborative relationship between designers and engravers in the eighteenth-century European art market.
