This lithograph, titled Le Marchand d'Images, captures a scene of itinerant commerce in a nineteenth-century town square. François Fortuné Antoine Férogio depicts a travelling merchant accompanied by a donkey, which serves as a mobile display for his religious wares. The animal is laden with framed prints of sacred figures, including a small shrine mounted on its back, while the merchant himself holds a depiction of the Crucifixion for the inspection of a small group of onlookers. A woman and two children observe the goods with curiosity, their posture suggesting a quiet, domestic engagement with the religious iconography on offer.
The composition is structured around the central figure of the donkey, which acts as the axis for the narrative. The background provides a sense of place, with architectural elements suggesting a Mediterranean or Italianate setting, common in the picturesque genre works of the period. The artist employs a delicate line quality, characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century lithographic techniques, which allows for fine detail in the clothing and the facial expressions of the figures. The hand-applied colour is restrained, focusing attention on the figures and the items for sale rather than the surrounding environment.
Férogio, a French artist known for his work in lithography and painting, often explored themes of daily life and travel.
