A precise pen and ink study by Canaletto, documenting the repair of the Campanile in Venice in 1745.
This drawing by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, captures a specific moment in Venetian history. Dated 23 April 1745, the work depicts the Campanile of St Mark's Basilica undergoing structural maintenance. Canaletto, a master of the veduta or view painting, provides a precise record of the scaffolding and repair apparatus attached to the iconic brick tower. The artist employs a fine pen-and-ink technique, supplemented by subtle washes to define the architectural volumes and the play of light across the stone surfaces.
The composition focuses on the verticality of the Campanile, which dominates the left side of the frame. Below, the Piazzetta is populated with small, sketch-like figures that provide a sense of scale to the massive structure. The inclusion of the Procuratie Nuove and the distant Clock Tower establishes the spatial context of the square. Unlike his more polished oil paintings, this drawing reveals the artist's working process, including the handwritten inscription in the upper left corner that documents the date and the nature of the repairs.
Canaletto's ability to balance architectural accuracy with atmospheric observation is evident here. The lines are controlled and deliberate, reflecting his training as a theatrical scene painter. The work functions as both a topographical record and a study of urban life in mid-eighteenth-century Venice. By documenting the mundane reality of building maintenance, Canaletto offers a perspective on the city that differs from the idealized vistas often found in his larger commissions. This print captures the technical precision of the original drawing, preserving the delicate tonal variations and the clarity of the architectural details. It is a piece for those interested in the history of Venice and the development of European topographical art.
