This engraving depicts the biblical figure of Saint Peter in a moment of profound remorse. The composition draws upon the narrative of Peter denying Christ, indicated by the presence of the cockerel perched upon a rock to the left. The artist employs a sophisticated use of line to define the texture of the saint's garments, the rugged terrain, and the foliage overhead. The inclusion of the keys, a traditional attribute of Saint Peter, rests in the foreground, serving as a reminder of his role as the gatekeeper of heaven.
Van Swanenburg was a skilled engraver working within the Dutch tradition of the early seventeenth century.
