Beskrivning

A tender double portrait of the artist's daughters, Mary and Margaret, captured in a natural, informal setting with characteristic fluid brushwork.

Thomas Gainsborough painted this double portrait of his daughters, Mary and Margaret, during his time in Ipswich. The work captures the two girls in a natural setting, a hallmark of Gainsborough's approach to portraiture. Unlike the formal, rigid poses common in eighteenth-century British art, this composition feels informal and immediate. The girls appear caught in a moment of play, their expressions reflecting a youthful curiosity.

Gainsborough utilised a fluid, light brushwork style that allows the fabric of their dresses to appear soft and tactile. The background, while sketchily rendered, provides a sense of depth and atmosphere that connects the figures to the outdoors. The inclusion of the small dog adds a domestic touch, grounding the scene in the reality of the artist's family life. The palette consists of muted earth tones, soft creams, and browns, which harmonise with the natural environment depicted behind the subjects.

This painting is one of several portraits Gainsborough produced of his children as they grew. It demonstrates his ability to balance the requirements of a formal portrait with a genuine sense of affection and observation. The composition avoids the stiff artifice often found in portraiture of the period, opting instead for a gentle, observational quality. The light plays across the surfaces of the girls' clothing, creating a sense of movement and life. This piece remains a primary example of Gainsborough's skill in capturing the character of his subjects through loose, expressive paint application and a keen eye for naturalistic detail.

Artist Biography

Thomas Gainsborough

Gainsborough composed landscape scenes by building tabletop models from broccoli and cauliflower for trees, lumps of coal for hills, and mirrors for water. He painted from these arrangements in his studio. He said he was sick of portraits and wished he could walk off with his viol-da-gamba to paint landscapes. Portraits paid the bills. Landscapes were what he loved.

He was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, in 1727. His father went bankrupt in 1733. He moved to London as a teenager and trained under the French engraver Hubert-Francois Gravelot. By his thirties he was one of the two dominant portrait painters in Georgian England, the other being Joshua Reynolds. The rivalry with Reynolds defined both their careers.

The Blue Boy is probably his most famous painting, though he would have preferred to be remembered for his landscapes. On his deathbed he reconciled with Reynolds. Reynolds later wrote that the Royal Academy had lost one of its greatest ornaments. Gainsborough died in 1788, aged sixty-one.
