A traditional Japanese woodblock print by Ryūkōsai Jokei, capturing the actor Hanagiri Toyomatsu III in a female role.
This woodblock print by Ryūkōsai Jokei depicts the actor Hanagiri Toyomatsu III in the role of Ohaya. The artist was a practitioner of the Kamigata school, which operated in the Osaka and Kyoto regions. Unlike the more common Edo-style prints, Kamigata works often focus on the specific features and expressions of individual actors, providing a record of theatrical performances from the late eighteenth century.
The subject is an onnagata, a male actor who specialises in female roles. The print captures the actor in a standing pose, wearing a kimono with a distinct pattern. The line work is precise, defining the folds of the fabric and the elaborate hairstyle. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones that have mellowed over time, which is characteristic of the period's printing techniques. The figure is positioned against a plain background, directing the viewer's attention to the costume and the actor's posture.
Ryūkōsai Jokei is known for his contributions to the genre of yakusha-e, or actor prints. His work provides insight into the conventions of Kabuki theatre during the Edo period. The print serves as a document of the aesthetic preferences of the time, where the stylised representation of the human form was balanced with the need to identify the specific performer. The inclusion of the actor's name in the calligraphy on the right side of the print confirms the identity of the performer, a common practice in theatrical portraiture of the era. This piece is an example of the technical skill involved in the production of woodblock prints, from the initial carving of the blocks to the application of pigment on paper.
