A 15th-century Catalan depiction of the Nativity, featuring tempera and gold leaf on panel in the International Gothic style.
This work by Jaume Ferrer the Younger, a Catalan painter active during the mid-15th century, exemplifies the International Gothic style prevalent in the Iberian Peninsula. The composition depicts the birth of Christ, with the Virgin Mary kneeling in prayer before the infant, who lies upon a golden cloth. The scene is set within a rustic structure, featuring a thatched roof and a woven fence, which provides a tactile contrast to the refined application of gold leaf on the halos and the upper border of the panel.
Ferrer employs a flattened perspective, typical of the period, where figures are arranged to prioritise narrative clarity over spatial depth. The Virgin is dressed in a dark mantle adorned with gold crowns, a detail that reflects the high status often attributed to religious figures in medieval iconography. To the left, a saintly figure stands in contemplation, while shepherds gather on the right, their humble attire and wooden staves grounding the scene in a pastoral reality. The inclusion of the ox and the donkey, peering from behind a stone wall, follows traditional theological iconography.
Technical precision is evident in the rendering of the figures and the decorative patterns on the garments. The use of tempera allows for a crisp, linear quality, particularly in the facial features and the folds of the drapery. The gold-tooled background at the top of the panel adds a sense of celestial light, separating the earthly event from the divine realm. This piece provides a clear view into the devotional art practices of Catalonia during the 1400s, where local workshops combined traditional techniques with the stylistic influences of Northern European and Italian masters. The work remains a representative example of the religious art produced for ecclesiastical settings in the region.
