This work, painted by the Dominican friar Fra Angelico, depicts the biblical scene where Zechariah writes the name of his son, John the Baptist, on a tablet. It originally formed part of the predella for the Annalena Altarpiece. The composition is organised with a clear sense of order, typical of the Florentine Renaissance. To the left, the elderly Zechariah sits, his posture focused as he writes. He is surrounded by a group of women, including Elizabeth, who holds the infant John. The figures are rendered with a gentle grace, their garments falling in soft, naturalistic folds that define their forms.

The architectural setting provides a structured backdrop for the narrative. A high wall separates the foreground from a distant, deep blue sky and trees, while a simple building with an arched doorway occupies the right side. The use of light is consistent and clear, casting soft shadows that ground the figures within the space. Fra Angelico employs a palette of muted earth tones, punctuated by the deep blues and reds of the robes, which draw the eye across the scene. The painting reflects the artist's ability to combine theological narrative with a humanised approach to sacred subjects.

Every element, from the expressions on the faces of the women to the precise placement of the figures, contributes to a sense of quiet solemnity. The work demonstrates the transition from the Gothic style towards the more rational, spatial concerns of the fifteenth century.
