A detailed Pahari miniature painting from the Siege of Lanka series, depicting the monkey warrior Angada raiding the fortress of Ravana.
This miniature painting originates from the Guler region of the Punjab Hills, attributed to the artist Manaku. It belongs to a series depicting the Siege of Lanka, a narrative sequence from the Ramayana. The composition illustrates the episode where Angada, a monkey warrior, infiltrates the fortress of the demon king Ravana to seize his crown.
The visual narrative employs a flattened perspective typical of the Pahari style. The fortress is rendered in a bright, saturated yellow, contrasting with the soft green of the surrounding terrain. Figures are depicted in profile, with the monkey army and the demon inhabitants distinguished by their distinct forms and colours. Angada is shown in motion, leaping from the ramparts with the crown, while other figures engage in the chaos of the raid. The upper register contains Sanskrit text in Devanagari script, providing context for the scene below.
Manaku is recognised for his contribution to the development of the Guler-Kangra style. His work often features clear, rhythmic arrangements of figures and a refined use of colour. The application of opaque watercolour and gold leaf provides a luminosity that defines the high quality of these courtly commissions. The scene balances the urgency of the raid with a decorative order, characteristic of the period's approach to epic storytelling. This print captures the precise brushwork and the narrative clarity of the original folio, preserving the historical aesthetic of eighteenth-century Indian miniature art.
