This fresco is located in the Convento di San Marco in Florence, specifically within the cells intended for the meditation of the friars. Fra Angelico painted this work to assist in the devotional practice of the monks, providing a visual aid for contemplation on the Passion of Christ.
The composition is unusual for its time. Christ sits centrally, blindfolded and holding a reed, while only the disembodied hands and heads of his tormentors appear around him. This choice removes the narrative action of the scene, focusing instead on the symbolic nature of the suffering. The figures of the Virgin Mary and Saint Dominic are seated in the foreground, acting as witnesses to the event.
