A dramatic Flemish Baroque depiction of the miraculous draught of fishes, capturing the physical intensity and emotional response of the disciples.
Jacob Jordaens, a contemporary of Peter Paul Rubens, produced this dynamic interpretation of the biblical narrative concerning the miraculous draught of fishes. The composition centres on the interaction between Christ and his disciples, capturing a moment of theological weight through physical movement and expressive anatomy. Jordaens employs a dramatic use of light and shadow, a hallmark of the Flemish Baroque, to guide the viewer across the crowded scene.
The figures are rendered with a sense of physical presence, their musculature and postures conveying the exertion of the fishermen. The central figure of Peter, holding a fish, acts as a bridge between the human toil of the disciples and the divine authority of Christ. The background, suggesting a coastal setting, remains secondary to the emotional and physical intensity of the foreground group. Jordaens avoids the static arrangements of earlier periods, opting instead for a composition that feels immediate and tactile.
This work demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesise narrative clarity with the energetic brushwork characteristic of the Antwerp school. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, punctuated by the lighter garments of Christ and the reflective surfaces of the fish, creating a visual rhythm that draws the eye through the various reactions of the disciples. The painting reflects the Counter-Reformation focus on accessible, emotive religious imagery, designed to engage the viewer directly in the spiritual experience. Through his handling of form and light, Jordaens creates a scene that feels both grounded in the reality of the labouring men and elevated by the presence of the central figure.
