Frits Thaulow, a Norwegian painter active during the late nineteenth century, is recognised for his technical mastery in depicting moving water. This work, dated 1897, captures a quiet scene featuring a wooden walkway extending over a calm, turquoise stream. The structure of the mill, rendered in brick and plaster, provides a solid architectural counterpoint to the fluid, shifting surface of the water below.

Thaulow spent much of his career travelling through Europe, settling for periods in France where he engaged with the techniques of the Impressionists. His approach to this subject demonstrates a focus on the interplay of light and reflection. The water surface acts as a mirror, catching the pale sky and the surrounding structures, while the brushwork remains controlled and precise. Unlike many of his contemporaries who favoured broken, rapid strokes, Thaulow employed a smoother application of paint to convey the density and transparency of the stream.
