Beskrivning
Three men in bowler hats stand beneath floating crescent moons in this iconic 1955 Surrealist work by René Magritte.
René Magritte, a central figure in the Surrealist movement, painted The Masterpiece or The Mysteries of the Horizon in 1955. The composition features three men wearing identical bowler hats and dark coats, positioned against a twilight sky. Each figure is oriented differently, with one seen from the back, one in profile, and one facing the viewer. Above each hat floats a crescent moon, a recurring motif in Magritte's work that disrupts the expected relationship between the subject and the celestial environment.
Magritte often employed the bowler hat as a symbol of the anonymous middle-class man, a figure he identified with throughout his career. By repeating the figure and placing them in a sparse, ambiguous setting, he invites the viewer to question the nature of reality and perception. The painting avoids traditional narrative, instead presenting a visual puzzle that relies on the juxtaposition of mundane objects with impossible elements. The horizon line separates the dark, indistinct ground from the deepening blue of the sky, creating a sense of vastness that contrasts with the static, repetitive nature of the figures.
This work demonstrates the artist's interest in the tension between the visible and the hidden. The figures appear to be observing the same scene, yet their differing perspectives suggest a lack of shared experience. Magritte does not provide a resolution to the mystery, preferring to maintain the ambiguity of the image. The clean lines and smooth application of paint are characteristic of his approach, which prioritises clarity of form to heighten the strangeness of the subject matter. Through this precise technique, he transforms a simple scene into an inquiry into the limits of human understanding.

The Masterpiece or The Mysteries of the Horizon - René Magritte
Artist Biography
Rene Magritte
He grew up in Lessines, Belgium. His mother drowned herself in the River Sambre when he was thirteen; her body was found with her nightdress wrapped around her face. Whether this explains the recurring covered faces in his paintings is a question biographers have insisted on and Magritte consistently refused to answer.
He studied at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and spent several years working as a commercial artist and wallpaper designer. The commercial work is relevant: his painting technique is deliberately flat, illustrative, and impersonal. There are no visible brushstrokes, no evidence of struggle. The surfaces look like advertisements for impossible things. He painted in a small room in his house, wearing a suit, with his easel next to the living room furniture.
He was a Surrealist but not the Parisian variety. He disliked Breton's intellectualising and preferred to work from home in Brussels. His version of Surrealism was cooler and more logical: ordinary objects placed in wrong contexts, familiar things made strange through simple displacement. A rock floating in the sky. An apple covering a face. A train emerging from a fireplace. Each painting poses a single visual problem and leaves you to solve it.
He made relatively few paintings compared to his contemporaries. Each one is self-contained. He did not develop through phases or wrestle with form. He found his approach early and refined it quietly for decades.
