This engraving by the anonymous German printmaker known as Master ES depicts the traditional martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. The composition is organised into two distinct zones: the foreground features the immediate action of the executioners, while the background provides a narrative context with a distant city and rocky terrain. The artist employs a linear style, using hatching and cross-hatching to define form and shadow within the figures and the surrounding environment.
Master ES is a figure of significant interest in the history of printmaking, active in the Upper Rhine region during the mid-fifteenth century. His work represents a transition in the medium of engraving, moving away from the simpler techniques of the early goldsmith-engravers towards a more sophisticated system of modelling. The figures in this print exhibit the characteristic elongated proportions and expressive, somewhat angular gestures common to the period. The executioners are depicted in contemporary fifteenth-century dress, a common convention in religious art of the time, which served to bring the biblical narrative into the viewer's own temporal reality.
The scene is constructed with a focus on narrative clarity. The central figure of the saint is bound to a tree, his body pierced by arrows, yet his gaze remains directed upwards.
