A dramatic late Baroque oil painting by Giulia Lama, depicting the martyrdom of Saint Eurosia through stark light and shadow.
Giulia Lama, a Venetian painter active during the early eighteenth century, produced this dramatic composition depicting the martyrdom of Saint Eurosia. The work demonstrates the tenebrism often associated with the Venetian school of the period, utilising strong contrasts between light and shadow to focus the viewer on the grim narrative. The executioner stands upright, holding the severed head of the saint, while the body of Eurosia lies collapsed in the foreground.
Lama was a contemporary of Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, and her work shares his interest in emotional intensity and rough, expressive brushwork. Unlike many of her peers who favoured polished surfaces, Lama employed a more tactile application of paint. This approach creates a sense of immediacy and raw energy. The palette is restricted to earth tones, ochres, and deep shadows, which serves to heighten the gravity of the scene.
Historical records regarding Lama were sparse for many years, as her contributions were frequently misattributed to male contemporaries. Modern scholarship has corrected these errors, identifying her distinct hand through her characteristic handling of anatomy and light. This piece is a representative example of her ability to convey complex theological narratives through a stark, uncompromising visual language. The composition avoids unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the physical reality of the event. The figure of the executioner, partially obscured by the gloom, provides a chilling counterpoint to the fallen saint. This print captures the texture of the original canvas, preserving the specific tonal shifts and the energetic mark-making that define Lama's approach to religious subject matter.
