A Venetian School painting depicting the mythological union of Cupid and Psyche, rendered with fluid brushwork and dramatic lighting.
This work by Andrea Schiavone depicts the union of Cupid and Psyche, a narrative drawn from the writings of Apuleius. Schiavone, a painter active in Venice during the mid-sixteenth century, was known for his fluid brushwork and a painterly approach that diverged from the rigid classicism of his contemporaries. His style often prioritised movement and atmospheric effects over precise anatomical definition.
The composition features a gathering of figures set against a dark, moody sky. Cupid, positioned centrally, reaches towards Psyche, who stands draped in light-coloured fabric. To the left, a seated figure, likely Jupiter, presides over the scene, accompanied by his eagle. The figures are rendered with loose, rapid strokes, a technique that allows the light to catch the edges of the forms and creates a sense of kinetic energy. The palette is dominated by deep blues, ochres, and warm flesh tones, which contrast with the shadowy background.
Schiavone was heavily influenced by the works of Parmigianino and Titian, and this painting reflects his ability to synthesise these influences into a personal aesthetic. The elongated proportions of the figures and the dramatic, almost sketch-like application of paint are characteristic of his later period. The scene captures a moment of transition, where the divine and the mortal realms intersect through the ritual of marriage. The inclusion of various mythological attributes, such as the vessel carried by the figure on the right, adds layers of symbolic detail to the narrative. This print captures the texture of the original canvas, preserving the artist's expressive handling of paint and the specific colour harmonies that define his Venetian heritage.
