Richard Dighton was a prolific British portraitist and caricaturist, known for his series of small, full-length watercolour portraits of public figures and local characters. This work, titled The Man Wot Drives the Sovereign, captures a coachman in the distinct attire of the early nineteenth century. The subject wears a heavy, multi-layered greatcoat, a garment designed for the harsh conditions faced by those operating horse-drawn transport. His wide-brimmed hat and gloves are rendered with the characteristic economy of line that defined Dighton's approach to caricature.
The title employs the colloquial spelling 'wot', a common stylistic choice in satirical prints of the era to denote the speech patterns of the working classes.
